Punjab Government Approves Flood Protection Plan for Ravi City
To protect riverside communities from potential flooding, the Punjab government has finalized a major flood protection plan in collaboration with the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA).
The project includes the construction of a 46-kilometer embankment around Ravi City, which has been added to the list of government priority schemes. The initiative is being supervised by the Housing Department and will be executed by RUDA with an initial allocation of Rs100 billion.
According to officials, RUDA requires at least Rs50 billion for immediate implementation, while the Punjab government has committed Rs150 billion as a repayable loan for the project’s completion. The plan also features the construction of two barrages to regulate water flow, with work expected to be completed within one year.
Punjab Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal and the CEO of the Central Business District (CBD) recently visited the proposed sites to review different aspects of the scheme. A formal summary has been sent to the Chief Minister for approval, and both the provincial government and RUDA have expressed their agreement to proceed with the project.
