Punjab to Launch Electric Bus Service in Six Districts
The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is set to introduce electric buses in six districts as part of a province-wide plan to promote environmentally friendly public transport.
Districts Covered in First Phase
According to the Punjab Transport Company, the first rollout will include the following districts:
-
Mianwali
-
Sargodha
-
Muzaffargarh
-
Wazirabad
-
Faisalabad
-
Pakpattan
Officials said the selection was based on population size, current transport demand, and air quality concerns.
Sargodha to Receive Largest Share
Among these districts, Sargodha will get the highest allocation with 48 electric buses. Each tehsil in the district is expected to operate 8–9 buses, ensuring widespread access for both urban and semi-urban areas. Operations are expected to begin once route testing and infrastructure work are completed, including charging stations and maintenance depots.
Toward Green and Modern Transport
The initiative is part of the province’s broader “Electro” green mobility program, which aims to:
-
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
-
Lower dependence on fuel
-
Improve air quality
-
Provide quieter and more comfortable travel
Future Expansion
The Punjab Transport Company is also setting up charging infrastructure, route digitization, and trained staff for EV operations. If successful, the project will expand to more districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Gujranwala, with plans to integrate feeder routes for seamless connectivity.
