Rhona Lloyd Rediscovers Her Love for Rugby Ahead of Women’s World Cup

Scotland winger Rhona Lloyd has opened up about her journey back to enjoying rugby, just months before the Women’s Rugby World Cup kicks off in England.

Six months ago, the 28-year-old was uncertain about her readiness — both mentally and physically — to compete on the sport’s biggest stage. But now, after a period of reflection, travel, and focused preparation, she says she’s “refreshed, smiling, and ready” for the tournament.

Lloyd, who has earned 58 caps and scored 25 tries for Scotland, took a short break from the sport earlier this year while playing club rugby in France. She returned to Edinburgh for some time off, focusing on her well-being and rediscovering her passion for the game.

“I needed to slow down, reset, and find my ‘why’ again,” she said. “The support from teammates, coaches, and family has been amazing.”

A major turning point came after the Guinness Women’s Six Nations, when Lloyd took part in the Camino de Santiago — a historic walking route across Europe — giving her valuable time away from the “rugby bubble.” The experience, she says, helped her return to training with a new perspective.

Lloyd also drew inspiration from her close friend and teammate Emma Wassell, who made a remarkable return to international rugby after a serious health challenge last year. “Seeing Emma back on the pitch was a full-circle moment. It reminded me what’s really important in life,” Lloyd reflected.

With renewed motivation, Lloyd is now looking forward to Scotland’s Pool B opener against Wales on August 23 in Manchester. The team will also face Fiji on August 30 and Canada on September 6.

“I’m playing with a smile again,” Lloyd said. “We have the best group of people in this squad, and we’re all buzzing for the World Cup.”
