Robert MacIntyre Shines with Sensational 62 to Lead BMW Championship After Storm Delay

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre delivered a masterclass in putting, closing with six consecutive birdies to card an impressive 8-under-par 62 and grab a three-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood in the opening round of the BMW Championship on Thursday.

A two-hour storm delay softened Caves Valley Golf Club, creating ideal scoring conditions that MacIntyre took full advantage of. His birdie blitz included a stunning 65-foot putt on the 12th and another from 40 feet, capped off with a simple 5-foot birdie on the 18th.

“The last six holes are probably as good as I’ve ever putted,” MacIntyre said, matching his lowest PGA TOUR round, which he first achieved at the Travelers Championship last year.

Fleetwood & Scheffler Stay Close
Tommy Fleetwood posted a bogey-free 65, showing no signs of last week’s heartbreak when he lost a two-shot lead late at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. “Playing well and being in contention is a privilege,” Fleetwood said, smiling when told about MacIntyre’s closing six birdies.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler carded a solid 66, making three birdies in his final four holes. “The course definitely got a bit easier after the rain, but I took advantage of it,” Scheffler said.

Other Notable Scores
Viktor Hovland, currently on the bubble for the TOUR Championship, started well with a 67. Rickie Fowler, Michael Kim, and Jason Day all shot 68 to boost their hopes of advancing to East Lake.

Not everyone enjoyed the soft greens. Xander Schauffele, chasing his streak of TOUR Championship appearances since 2017, struggled to a 74 after a rough start and a double bogey finish.

With only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings advancing after this event, every shot counts in the penultimate playoff stop.
