Roti and Naan Prices May Rise Sharply as Flour Costs Surge
The Naanbai associations have warned that the prices of roti and naan could see a steep hike if flour is not provided at the government’s controlled rates.
According to representatives, the cost of flour has increased by nearly 70% in the past two weeks, putting immense pressure on bakeries. They cautioned that without a steady supply of flour at official prices, the rate of roti could jump to Rs. 25 and naan to Rs. 30.
“If corrective measures are not taken immediately, we will have no choice but to raise prices and launch nationwide protests,” the association stated.
Market reports also show a sharp increase in wheat prices, with rates in Punjab climbing from Rs. 2,200 to Rs. 2,800 per maund. This has fueled inflationary concerns across the food sector.
Currently:
-
A 20kg flour bag is selling for Rs. 2,400, while the official rate is Rs. 1,810.
-
A 10kg flour bag is priced at Rs. 1,200, compared to the notified Rs. 905.
-
An 80kg fine flour sack now costs Rs. 10,500, up from Rs. 7,000.
Authorities in the twin cities and surrounding areas have also banned the sale of 15kg flour bags amid the escalating crisis.
With flour prices rising rapidly, naanbai associations are urging the government to step in before the cost of basic food items becomes unaffordable for ordinary citizens.
