Monsoon Weather Alert: Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms, and Flood Risks Expected Across Pakistan

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a comprehensive weather advisory for widespread rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding in various regions of Pakistan from July 13 to 16, as monsoon activity strengthens nationwide.

Severe Weather in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is likely to experience strong thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds, especially in areas such as Swat, Dir, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, and Peshawar. Local authorities are monitoring river and stream levels closely due to the risk of localized flooding.

Rain and Flood Advisory for Punjab

In Punjab, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rain and thunderstorms in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad. The Potohar region, northeastern Punjab, and areas near D.G. Khan are expected to receive particularly heavy rainfall.

In Rawalpindi, a flood emergency has been declared. Relief camps have been set up, and emergency teams are actively monitoring high-risk zones like Nullah Lai. In Lahore, the Air Quality Index (AQI) currently stands at 157, while temperatures hover around 34°C with 55% humidity. Rain is expected to continue in Lahore until July 16.

Karachi Prepares for Third Monsoon Spell

Karachi is currently experiencing humid conditions with temperatures around 32°C, though it feels closer to 39°C due to high humidity levels. Light rain is expected on July 13, while the third monsoon spell is forecast from July 15 to 17, potentially bringing moderate rainfall across the city and surrounding areas.

Northern Pakistan Under Landslide Watch

Areas such as Murree, Galiyat, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are under advisories for heavy rain and landslides. Residents and travelers are advised to exercise caution in hilly regions where transport disruptions may occur.

Rain Forecast for Balochistan and Sindh

In Balochistan, districts including Barkhan, Kohlu, Zhob, and Lasbela are expected to experience thunderstorms with isolated heavy rain. Meanwhile, hot and humid weather will persist across most of Sindh, with light showers likely in Umerkot, Mithi, Sukkur, and coastal areas.

Urban Flooding and Infrastructure Safety

Between July 13 and 14, there is a possibility of urban flooding in major cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Peshawar. Authorities are also warning of potential damage to infrastructure such as power lines, trees, and solar panels due to strong winds.

Public Safety Advisory

The PDMA encourages residents, especially those in vulnerable or low-lying areas, to remain cautious, follow official weather updates, and take necessary precautions during this active monsoon season. Relief and emergency teams are on standby to provide assistance where needed.
