Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Hopes Take an Unexpected Twist
October 10, 2025
In a surprising turn of events, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, has dedicated her win to former US President Donald Trump, recognizing his support for Venezuela’s democracy movement and his role in recent global peace efforts.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Machado wrote:
“I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!”
She continued, “We are on the threshold of victory. Now, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our allies in achieving freedom and democracy.”
The dedication came shortly after the White House released a statement criticizing the Nobel Committee’s decision, accusing it of prioritizing “politics over peace.” The statement said, “The Nobel Committee has once again shown that it places political narratives above genuine efforts toward peace.”
The announcement of Machado’s Nobel Prize coincided with a major geopolitical milestone — just one day after the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, proposed by Trump last month, came into effect.
At 58, Machado has been one of Venezuela’s most vocal voices against President Nicolás Maduro’s regime. She has repeatedly praised Trump’s strong stance on Venezuela, even calling the US naval deployment near Venezuelan waters a “necessary step” toward restoring democracy.
The Nobel Committee, in its citation, commended Machado for her “tireless struggle for democratic rights for the Venezuelan people and her efforts to achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Machado has spent the past year in hiding after Venezuela’s disputed elections, which international observers widely condemned as rigged in favor of Maduro.
Although barred from running for office, Machado has backed former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, who is recognized by much of the international community as the legitimate winner of Venezuela’s last election.
