Maryam Nawaz Announces SART Electric Transit System for Faisalabad and Gujranwala After Successful Lahore Test
LAHORE — Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the upcoming launch of the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) system in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, following a successful pilot run in Lahore.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister took part in a test ride of the fully electric SART train, which operated from Raiwind Road to Muslim Town. She inspected the train’s features and oversaw its performance during live traffic conditions.
“This is a major step forward for public transport in Punjab,” she said. “We aim to offer modern, efficient, and eco-friendly travel solutions for our citizens.”
Pakistan’s First Trackless, Fully Electric Tram
Developed by Norinco International, the SART system represents Pakistan’s first trackless electric tram, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional transport.
The vehicle features:
-
Air-conditioned coaches
-
Seating capacity for up to 320 passengers in three compartments (expandable to four)
-
Range of 40 kilometers per full charge
Already operational in countries like China, Turkey, and the UAE, the SART aims to reduce urban traffic congestion and air pollution, making it a welcome innovation for Pakistani cities.
Technology and Passenger Comfort
During the inspection, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan briefed the CM on the SART’s advanced features and commuter-friendly design. The test run, held amid regular traffic, drew attention from citizens curious to witness the next generation of public transport.
Faisalabad and Gujranwala to Benefit Next
Following Lahore’s success, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz confirmed that Faisalabad and Gujranwala would soon experience the benefits of the SART system.
“The people of Punjab deserve world-class urban transportation. The SART project will help modernize our cities and provide convenience to the public,” she added.
This initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader vision to modernize infrastructure while promoting green and sustainable solutions.
