Yasir Sultan Wins Bronze for Pakistan at Asian Throwing Championships
Pakistan has secured another medal in javelin as Yasir Sultan claimed bronze at the Asian Throwing Championships in South Korea, delivering his best performance of the season.
The 27-year-old, Pakistan’s only representative at the event, produced a season-best throw of 77.43 metres on his sixth and final attempt. This clutch performance placed him ahead of China’s Zhu Kai Zhu and ensured a podium finish. His earlier throws measured 75.79m, 72.57m, and 72.88m, while two attempts were recorded as fouls.
The gold medal went to Sri Lanka’s Pathirage Rumesh Tharanga, who achieved an impressive throw of 82.05m, while Japan’s Gen Naganuma secured silver with a distance of 78.60m, highlighting the tough competition.
For Yasir Sultan, 2025 has been a breakthrough year, establishing him as one of Pakistan’s leading athletes. His success also provides a timely boost for Pakistan’s athletics community, which is eagerly awaiting the return of Arshad Nadeem.
Nadeem, who won Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic gold in javelin at the Paris 2024 Games, is currently recovering from calf muscle surgery in Cambridge. While he has resumed light training, he is set to miss upcoming Diamond League events in Poland (August 16) and Switzerland (August 27) as part of his rehabilitation.
Yasir Sultan’s bronze medal is a reminder that Pakistan’s javelin hopes are no longer dependent on a single athlete. With continued support and proper infrastructure, rising stars like him can help Pakistan remain a strong contender in international athletics.
