12 Pakistani Migrants Survive Deadly Boat Tragedy Off Libya Coast
October 29, 2025
At least 18 people have lost their lives after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Libya, the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed on Tuesday. The tragedy occurred near the coastal city of Surman, after the wooden vessel capsized just hours into its journey due to rough sea conditions.
Survivors Include 12 Pakistanis
According to IOM, 64 passengers were rescued from the sinking boat. Among the survivors were 12 Pakistani men, 29 Sudanese men, one Sudanese woman, one Sudanese child, 18 Bangladeshi men, and three Somali men. Authorities have yet to confirm the identities and nationalities of the deceased.
A Grim Reminder of Migrant Risks
The IOM described the incident as another heartbreaking example of the dangers faced by migrants who risk their lives on unsafe boats in search of better opportunities and safety abroad.
Thousands of migrants continue to attempt perilous sea crossings from North Africa to Europe each year, often in overcrowded and poorly equipped vessels. The IOM has repeatedly called for stronger international cooperation to prevent such tragedies and ensure safe and legal migration routes.
