Luka Modrić Joins AC Milan: “This Club Was Once What Real Madrid Is Today”

Veteran Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić has officially joined AC Milan, marking the start of a new chapter in his legendary football career. During his presentation as a new Rossoneri player, the former Real Madrid star shared his excitement, ambitions, and deep admiration for Milan’s historic legacy.

Modrić, who spent 13 unforgettable years at Real Madrid, described the Spanish giants as “the biggest club in the world,” but acknowledged Milan as a team that once held a similar status in global football.

“I spent 13 years at the biggest club in the world, and now I’m joining a team that, years ago, was what Real Madrid is today,” said Modrić. “Milan must strive to return to that level, and I’m here to help in every way I can.”

The 38-year-old midfielder leaves Madrid with a record 28 trophies, including five Champions League titles, making him one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.

A Personal Connection to Milan

Modrić shared his emotional farewell to Madrid but noted that AC Milan has always held a special place in his heart. Growing up in Croatia, he admired Milan for their dominance and connection to his idol, Zvonimir Boban.

“Milan was my favorite team as a kid. It was very popular in Croatia, especially because of Boban. I’ve always had a special affection for these colors,” he said.

Eyes on a Competitive Comeback

Now fully committed to Milan, Modrić emphasized that the club should not settle for mediocrity.

“The minimum goal is to qualify for the Champions League. But Milan must aim to win titles. We need to work hard and stay humble. I’m very competitive and I want to bring that mindset to the team.”

He highlighted the importance of unity and team effort, reminding fans that no individual can succeed alone.

Ready for Serie A and the Future

Modrić also spoke about his motivation to embrace a new challenge in Serie A, a league he follows closely due to the strong Croatian presence and tactical intensity.

“Serie A is very organized tactically. It’s different from La Liga, and I’ll need to adapt quickly. But I feel ready. There are high expectations, and I embrace that.”

While the move to Milan may appear to be a “last dance” for the midfielder, he remains focused on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing his desire to continue performing at the highest level.

“I don’t like to look too far ahead. The most important thing is to live in the present and do things right.”

The Milan Project and Ancelotti’s Praise

Modrić revealed that the key moment in his decision to join Milan came when sporting director Igli Tare called to share the club’s vision.

“That call made a big impact. When someone explains their project and shows they believe in you, it becomes easier. I also spoke with Zlatan Ibrahimović and Carlo Ancelotti, who both spoke very highly of the club.”

The Croatian midfielder was impressed by the club’s organization, fan support, and overall atmosphere. He praised Milan’s ambition and promised to give his all for the team.

“It’s a great feeling to be part of this club. I’m here to help, to lead, and to fight for success — just like I’ve always done.”
