Strong Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan, Hundreds Dead and Injured

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday, leaving at least 800 people dead and over 2,500 injured, according to Taliban government officials.

The quake hit Kunar province, near Jalalabad in Nangarhar, at 11:47 p.m. local time. With a shallow depth of just 8 kilometers, the tremor caused extensive damage to homes and buildings. Several aftershocks followed, further complicating rescue efforts.

Footage from the affected areas shows rescuers carrying injured victims on stretchers and helicopters transporting them to safety, while local residents frantically dig through rubble in search of missing family members.

A Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed that Kunar province bore the brunt of the disaster, with the majority of casualties reported there. Authorities continue rescue and relief operations as the community struggles to cope with the aftermath.

The international community has expressed concern, highlighting the urgent need for emergency aid and support for affected families in eastern Afghanistan.
