Apple eyes US Formula 1 broadcast rights after ‘F1: The Movie’ success

Apple Reportedly Eyes Formula 1 US Broadcast Rights After ‘F1: The Movie’ Box Office Success

Apple is reportedly in discussions to acquire the U.S. broadcast rights for Formula 1, as the current contract is set to become available next year. The move follows the strong box office debut of the tech giant’s racing-themed blockbuster, “F1: The Movie”, starring Brad Pitt, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The film has seen massive success since its release, grossing an impressive $293 million in just 10 days, according to sources including Variety. The popularity of the movie is seen as a key factor driving Apple’s interest in expanding into live sports broadcasting—specifically in the rapidly growing world of Formula 1 racing.

Apple vs ESPN for Formula 1 Coverage

Apple is reportedly preparing to challenge ESPN, the current U.S. broadcaster of Formula 1 and a subsidiary of Disney, for the rights to air F1 from 2026 onwards. Citing sources familiar with the negotiations, the Financial Times reports that Apple is exploring strategic opportunities to capitalize on the sport’s surging popularity in the United States.

Apple and Formula 1 have not yet commented on the reported talks, and Reuters has not independently verified the claim.

Streaming Wars Heat Up Around Formula 1

Interest in Formula 1 has skyrocketed in the U.S., thanks in part to the global success of Netflix’s docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive”, which has brought new fans to the sport and increased viewership across younger demographics.

Earlier this year, multiple media reports indicated that Netflix, along with other major players, is also vying for the Formula 1 rights, following the expiration of ESPN’s exclusivity period to renegotiate.

If Apple secures the rights, it would mark another major investment into live sports streaming, joining its existing partnerships that include Major League Soccer (MLS) and Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV+.

A Strategic Move for Apple

As Apple continues to grow its footprint in the entertainment and streaming industry, acquiring Formula 1 broadcasting rights would align with its broader push into premium sports content. With the success of “F1: The Movie” and its expanding media portfolio, Apple is positioning itself as a serious contender in the future of sports broadcasting.
