Gabriel’s Stoppage-Time Header Gives Arsenal 2-1 Win Over Newcastle

London | September 29, 2025 – Arsenal kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle on Sunday, thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from defender Gabriel.

The Gunners trailed much of the match after Nick Woltemade’s 34th-minute strike for Newcastle, but a late surge turned the game around. Mikel Merino equalized in the 84th minute, and deep into added time, Gabriel rose highest from a corner to power in the winning header.

The result lifts Mikel Arteta’s side to second place, just two points behind leaders Liverpool, who suffered their first defeat of the season at Crystal Palace a day earlier.

“There are opportunities and moments in a season when you have to find a way to win,” Arteta said after describing the victory as a “statement” performance.

Late Drama Continues for Arsenal

For the second straight week, Arsenal relied on late heroics. Gabriel Martinelli’s 93rd-minute strike had salvaged a draw against Manchester City last weekend. This time, Gabriel’s decisive header ensured all three points.

Bukayo Saka summed up the emotions: “It’s unbelievable, late winners — there’s nothing better in football. Speechless.”

Newcastle, meanwhile, were left frustrated after seeing VAR overturn a first-half penalty call against goalkeeper Nick Pope. The Magpies’ shot-stopper also produced several key saves to deny Arsenal further goals.

Despite the drama, Arteta praised his squad:

“We fully deserved the win with the way we played, competed, and created chances. I’m proud of the team.”

Relief for Aston Villa

Elsewhere, Aston Villa secured their first league win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Fulham. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham an early lead, but Villa responded strongly.

Ollie Watkins scored his first goal of the campaign before halftime, while quick-fire strikes from John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia shortly after the break sealed the comeback.

The win eased pressure on manager Unai Emery, whose team had endured a tough start with two losses and three draws.

Villa will now look to build momentum after finally breaking their winless streak.
