Mitchell Starc Retires from T20 Internationals Ahead of World Cup
Australia – Australia’s pace legend Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from Twenty20 internationals, six months before the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, to focus on Test and ODI cricket.
The 35-year-old left-arm fast bowler finishes his T20 career with 79 wickets in 65 matches, making him Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format after Adam Zampa. Starc debuted in 2012 and played a key role in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup triumph, claiming 9 wickets in 7 matches.
In a statement, Starc said, “Test cricket has always been my highest priority. This is the best way to stay fresh and at my best for upcoming tours, the Ashes, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.”
Selectors chairman George Bailey praised Starc’s impact with the new ball and death overs, highlighting his unique swing at 145 km/h and exceptional fielding. He added that young bowlers like Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Xavier Bartlett will be given key T20 roles.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg lauded Starc for putting the team first, saying his retirement creates opportunities for the next generation of fast bowlers ahead of the T20 World Cup.
