Wiaan Mulderβs Unbeaten 367 Sparks Debate After Choosing Not to Break Brian Laraβs Record
South African cricketer Wiaan Mulderβs unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe has sparked widespread discussion after he chose to stop short of breaking Brian Laraβs iconic Test record of 400 runs in a single innings.
Standing in as South Africaβs Test captain, Mulder declared the innings at 626/5 on the second day of the Bulawayo Test, just 33 runs shy of Laraβs legendary 400 not outβthe highest individual score in Test cricket history. His decision to halt the chase stirred debate across the cricketing world.
In a recent interview with SuperSport, Mulder revealed that Brian Lara himself reached out after the match. Lara encouraged Mulder to aim higher, saying records are made to be broken and that Mulder should seize such moments to create his own legacy.
βHe told me I should have gone for it and that if I ever get another chance, I should try to surpass his record,β Mulder shared.
Despite Laraβs encouragement, Mulder remains comfortable with his choice. βBrian Lara holding onto that record feels right,β he said. βHe achieved 400 against England, and for a player of his stature, itβs special. If given the opportunity again, I might make the same decision.β
Mulderβs declaration helped South Africa secure a convincing victory inside three days, but many fans wonder if he passed up a chance at cricket immortality.
At just 27 years old, Mulder has plenty of time ahead. If form and fortune align, he may once again face the chance to chase historyβperhaps this time, following Laraβs advice.
