BRT fares in K-P raised by Rs10

Peshawar BRT Fares Increased Amid Rising Fuel Costs

PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) has announced a Rs10 increase in fares across all stages of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Peshawar, citing rising operational and fuel costs as the key reasons behind the adjustment.

According to an official notification, the minimum fare has been revised from Rs20 to Rs30, effective July 1, 2025. For Express Routes—marketed as faster, premium transit options—the fare will increase from Rs60 to Rs70.

Authorities emphasized that the revision was necessary to maintain service quality and ensure long-term sustainability of the city’s growing public transport system.

“This fare adjustment is essential to maintain high-quality and uninterrupted public transportation services amid increasing fuel and maintenance costs,” the notification stated.

BRT Expansion and Infrastructure Improvements

In response to growing passenger demand, Peshawar recently expanded its BRT fleet by introducing 72 new hybrid diesel buses, aimed at improving service coverage and reducing urban traffic congestion.

New routes have been added along Ring Road, Bara Road, and Khyber Road, with ongoing civil works expected to be completed within six months. Major infrastructure projects include the development of commercial plazas such as the Mall of Hayatabad and Dubgari Plaza, with completion targeted by April 2025.

To address traffic congestion and improve connectivity, plans are underway to construct seven underpasses along Ring Road and University Road. Feasibility studies for these projects are expected to conclude within two months. Additional underpasses in densely populated urban areas are also under consideration.

Focus on Urban Mobility and Future Plans

Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur reiterated his commitment to urban development and improved mobility, stating that despite financial challenges, infrastructure expansion remains a provincial priority.

As part of the broader vision to enhance public transportation across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, BRT-style transit systems are also planned for Mardan, Swat, Abbottabad, and Dera Ismail Khan, pending the outcome of feasibility studies.

Authorities are also working on clearing traffic bottlenecks across major roads, including University Road, with efforts already underway to improve traffic flow and commuter experience.
