August 28, 2025
Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday visited Shahdara to review the flood situation in River Ravi. Accompanied by officials, she boarded a boat to inspect water levels and ongoing relief operations.
Speaking to the media after her visit, the chief minister highlighted the challenges posed by continuous rainfall in recent weeks, which caused dangerous water levels in Punjab’s major rivers.
“I have never seen such high levels in the Ravi River. Our rivers were under great pressure, and timely preparations helped prevent a bigger disaster,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz praised the efforts of rescue teams and local administration, noting that over 50,000 people and a large number of livestock were safely relocated. She also assured citizens that the provincial government is committed to relief, rehabilitation, and compensation for those affected.
The chief minister emphasized the need for long-term planning, stating:
“Water is a blessing, but without proper storage systems and drainage planning, we remain vulnerable. I have directed departments to prepare concrete proposals on floodwater storage and management.”
12 Lives Lost in Punjab Floods
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that at least 12 people lost their lives during the recent floods. However, she clarified that no casualties occurred due to negligence by the administration or rescue agencies.
She said that boat-based rescue operations are ongoing, with several people already saved from debris. Around 200,000 livestock have also been shifted to safer locations, while food and shelter are being provided at relief camps.
The senior minister urged the public to stay away from flood-hit areas for their safety and avoid risky activities such as taking photos near water channels.
She praised the dedication of rescue and administrative teams, many of whom have worked continuously for days, and also acknowledged the role of media and public representatives in supporting relief efforts.
