Karachi Faces Heavy Rainfall, CM Urges Citizens to Stay Safe
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday urged Karachi residents to follow safety guidelines and remain indoors after heavy monsoon rains disrupted daily life across the city.
The rainfall, measuring over 200 millimetres in just 12 hours, led to waterlogging and power outages in several areas. According to officials, drainage operations began immediately after showers subsided, with teams from the provincial and municipal governments working round the clock.
During his visit to Nursery nullah, CM Murad reviewed ongoing clearance work alongside Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. He informed the media that 11 out of the city’s 14 underpasses had already been cleared, while efforts were continuing at the remaining locations.
The chief minister noted that Karachi’s drainage system was not designed for such intense rainfall, highlighting the need for long-term planning to expand capacity. He also pointed to the broader challenge of climate change, recalling recent rain-related incidents in other parts of the country.
Mayor Wahab added that most major roads were now open for traffic, though work was still underway in low-lying areas. He emphasised the importance of cooperation from residents in future development projects, particularly where land acquisition is required for drainage expansion.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during heavy showers to ensure safety.
