Earth’s CO2 levels reach highest point in millions of years

Global Carbon Dioxide Levels Reach Record High of 430.2 ppm, Scientists Warn of Climate Risks

ASTANA: Carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in Earth’s atmosphere have reached a record 430.2 parts per million (ppm) — the highest concentration recorded in modern history, according to data reported by EcoWatch and collected at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The latest readings were taken in May 2025, marking an increase of 3.5 ppm compared to the same period in 2024, when levels stood at 426.7 ppm. Experts attribute the continued rise in CO₂ levels to the burning of fossil fuels, a major contributor to climate change and global warming.

Impacts on Climate and Oceans

Scientists warn that elevated CO₂ levels are driving more extreme weather events, including:

  • Prolonged heatwaves

  • Intense droughts

  • Heavy rainfall and flooding

In addition to impacting weather, the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide is contributing to ocean acidification. This chemical shift poses a threat to marine ecosystems, making it difficult for marine species like corals and shellfish to build their skeletons and shells.

Global Monitoring and Climate Policy

While the Mauna Loa Observatory serves as a global reference point for atmospheric CO₂ measurements, it is not the only location tracking greenhouse gases. Other stations, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, are observing slightly lower levels due to seasonal and regional variations. All collected data contribute to the Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network, which plays a vital role in shaping international climate policy.

Call for Accelerated Climate Action

Earlier, the Astana International Forum hosted a panel session focused on accelerating climate action in ways that are both inclusive and effective. Discussions emphasized the urgency of transitioning to sustainable energy sources and reducing carbon emissions for the well-being of future generations.
