England to Host Next Three ICC World Test Championship Finals, Dashing India’s Hopes
In a major development confirmed at the ICC Annual Conference in Singapore, England has secured hosting rights for the next three ICC World Test Championship (WTC) finals, covering the 2027, 2029, and 2031 editions. The decision is seen as a significant setback for the BCCI, which had been campaigning to bring the marquee event to India starting from 2027.
ICC Opts for Consistency and Proven Success
The International Cricket Council (ICC) cited England’s successful history of hosting WTC finals—including smooth organization and high spectator turnout—as the key reasons behind the verdict. England has already hosted the first three editions, including the 2025 WTC Final at Lord’s, which was widely praised for its electric atmosphere.
“We are absolutely delighted that England and Wales have been chosen to host the next three ICC World Test Championship Finals,” said ECB chief executive Richard Gould.
BCCI’s Bid Falls Short
Despite India being a finalist in the first two WTC editions, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) pushing for a hosting opportunity, the ICC leaned toward stability. Jay Shah, the former BCCI secretary, was believed to be a key advocate for bringing the final to Indian soil, hoping to leverage India’s massive cricketing market and fan base.
However, logistical and seasonal challenges worked against India’s case. The WTC Final is played in June, when monsoon season in India makes hosting a major event risky. In contrast, England’s climate and cricketing infrastructure are considered ideal for that time of year.
Commercial Pull vs. Practical Reality
While India offers unmatched commercial potential, including massive TV audiences and sponsorship interest, the ICC reportedly favored England for its ability to consistently deliver sell-out crowds, even for neutral contests. This remains a challenge for other regions, including India, for Test cricket outside of national team matches.
Venues Yet to Be Confirmed
Although official venues for 2027, 2029, and 2031 are still under discussion, Lord’s remains the front-runner, especially after its successful staging of the 2025 final.
What This Means for India
The decision may be viewed as a missed opportunity for the BCCI, but it’s unlikely to be the end of their pursuit. As global cricket continues to evolve, and with growing calls for regional diversity in hosting rights, India could renew its campaign in future WTC cycles beyond 2031.
