Escalating Violence in Gaza and Lebanon: UN Calls for Ceasefire

GAZA CITY / BEIRUT – September 23, 2025: Intense airstrikes and ground operations have been reported in Gaza City, with at least 18 people killed in the city and four more elsewhere, according to local sources. Lebanon Seeks US Support

Following a deadly Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon that killed five people, including three children, President Joseph Aoun met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Beirut. Lebanon is urging Washington to ensure Israel respects the 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah, support the Lebanese army with equipment, and back reconstruction efforts in the country.

UN Urges Immediate Ceasefire

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, increased humanitarian aid, and the release of Israeli captives. UN officials highlighted the critical situation on the ground, emphasizing the need for renewed diplomatic efforts alongside the US and other mediators.

Ongoing Conflict

Meanwhile, Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, reported hitting an Israeli Merkava tank with anti-armour missiles in Gaza City’s Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood. The group confirmed the attack via Telegram but did not provide further details.

The situation in Gaza and southern Lebanon remains highly volatile, with international calls for de-escalation and humanitarian assistance continuing.
