Boxing Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Detained in Mexico on Serious Charges

MEXICO CITY: Former boxing world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, has been detained in Mexico after being deported from the United States, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

According to authorities, the 39-year-old athlete faces serious allegations of links with the Sinaloa cartel, which was recently declared a foreign terrorist organization by Washington. Reports suggest Chavez Jr. is accused of involvement in firearms trafficking and other criminal activities.

Mexican media, citing case files, claimed he allegedly acted as an “enforcer” for the cartel. The Reforma newspaper reported testimony alleging he was used to punish cartel members, though officials have not released full details of the indictment.

Chavez Jr. was handed over to Mexican authorities on Monday and transferred to a detention facility in Sonora state, according to the National Detention Registry.

Confirming the development, President Claudia Sheinbaum said, “He was deported,” adding that an active arrest warrant had been pending against him in Mexico.
