Taylor Fritz Clinches Laver Cup Victory for Team World
San Francisco, September 2025 β Inspired by Andre Agassiβs courtside energy, Taylor Fritz held his nerve to defeat Alexander Zverev, securing a 15-9 triumph for Team World against Team Europe at the Laver Cup.
Team World led 12-9 heading into the penultimate singles match. Zverev, ranked world number three, had the chance to level the score, but fifth-ranked Fritz delivered a composed 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Fritz credited the team environment and encouragement from Agassi, Team World captain, for his performance. βThe energy from the teamβ¦ the moments of winning feel so much better and the moments of losing feel so much worse. Youβre doing it for all these guys. It fires me up so much,β he said.
The win marks Team Worldβs third Laver Cup victory, following their titles in 2022 and 2023. Fritz had previously stunned world number one Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday, helping Team World build a strong 9-3 lead overnight.
Earlier on Sunday, Team Europe reduced their deficit to 9-6 when Alcaraz and Norwayβs Casper Ruud defeated American duo Alex Michelsen and Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in doubles. Australian Alex de Minaur then extended Team Worldβs advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech player Jakub Mensik.
Alcaraz kept Team Europe in contention by defeating Argentine Francisco Cerundolo 6-2, 6-1, but Fritz ultimately sealed the win against the European squad, captained by French tennis legend Yannick Noah.
βSeeing these guys on the bench getting pumped up, seeing a legend of the sport like Andre jumping out of his seat cheering for me, itβs just impossible not to give everything you have in every point,β Fritz said.
The next edition of the Laver Cup will take place from 25-27 September 2026 at Londonβs O2 Arena.
