Bianca Andreescu Shares Key Advice for Rising Star Victoria Mboko After Montreal Triumph
Canadian tennis legend Bianca Andreescu has offered some valuable guidance to fellow Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, urging her to “focus on the process” rather than getting caught up in results after her stunning victory in Montreal. Andreescu also highlighted the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people during a career breakthrough.
Mboko, who entered the Montreal WTA 1000 event ranked world No. 85 and with a main draw wildcard, stunned the tennis world by winning her first-ever WTA 1000 title on home soil. The 18-year-old rising star defeated four Grand Slam champions — Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Naomi Osaka — to claim the trophy. Her sensational run has now propelled her to world No. 24.
For Andreescu, Mboko’s journey feels familiar. In 2019, at just 18, Andreescu won her first WTA 1000 title in Indian Wells, followed by another in Toronto, before making history by winning the US Open. That season, she also achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 4.
However, Andreescu’s career since then has been marked by injury setbacks, inconsistent form, and mental health challenges — lessons she now wants to pass on to Mboko.
Speaking to CBC News, Andreescu said:
“I can only speak from experience. For me, it’s super important to enjoy the moment fully. Celebrate with your family and friends as much as you can. But in tennis, there’s always another tournament coming, so you have to get back to work quickly. I think focusing on the process rather than results is key because once you get a taste of success, you just want more.”
Andreescu admitted that the pressure of high expectations after her 2019 breakout was difficult to manage. Now, all eyes will be on how Mboko handles her new fame and whether she can build on this momentum to achieve even greater success.
