From Youth to Pro: Mexico’s Ochoa and Frías Shine Across Three Baseball5 World Cups

 October 6, 2025 | Tepic, Mexico

For most young athletes, playing in one World Cup is a dream come true. But for Mexico’s Jahir Ochoa and Olivia Frías, the past three years have been a whirlwind of global competition — representing their country at three consecutive WBSC Baseball5 World Cups.

Both players have become symbols of dedication and progress, bridging the gap between youth and senior categories while inspiring Mexico’s growing Baseball5 community.

A Journey of Growth and Determination

Ochoa’s international journey began at the WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup Ankara 2023, where Mexico claimed a bronze medal. It was his first experience competing on a world stage — a moment that taught him the discipline and mental strength needed for elite sport.

“That’s what makes a player — learning from your mistakes,” Ochoa reflected.

The following year, he faced a much tougher challenge at the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup Hong Kong 2024, where Mexico competed against older, stronger, and more experienced teams, finishing sixth overall.

“It’s more difficult because people play with more speed, more strength, and a stronger mentality,” Ochoa said, describing the step up in competition.

Returning home to compete in the 2025 Youth Baseball5 World Cup in Tepic, Ochoa took on a leadership role. His confidence and performance levels soared — he recorded 83 at-bats across 16 sets, compared to just 29 in 2024 and 10 in 2023, a sign of his steady growth and maturity.

“I felt more confident this year because everyone was at the same level,” he said. “But both categories are strong — you learn something new from each.”

Setting Sights on the Future

With three World Cups and a medal already under his belt before aging out of the youth category, Ochoa now aims to sharpen his mental strength, fitness, and tactical awareness to thrive at the senior level.

For both Ochoa and Frías, the journey from youth competition to international recognition reflects the rapid rise of Baseball5 in Mexico — a sport that rewards skill, teamwork, and resilience.
