Funding Delay Forces PHF to Ask FIH for Another Pro League Extension

Pakistan Hockey Federation Awaits Decision on Pro League Participation Amid Funding Delays

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is still waiting to finalize the national team’s participation in the upcoming FIH Pro League, as the governing body seeks another deadline extension from the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

According to reports, the PHF has been unable to raise the required funds on time and is awaiting confirmation of government support before making a final commitment.

Pakistan received a rare opportunity to join the nine-nation league after New Zealand withdrew earlier this year due to financial issues. As runners-up in the Nations Cup held in Kuala Lumpur, Pakistan was next in line to take part. Initially, the FIH had asked the PHF to confirm participation by August 12, later extending it to August 20. With the deadline now passed, the PHF has formally requested more time.

PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid told reporters in Lahore that talks with the federal government are ongoing.

“We have written to the FIH for additional time, as details regarding funding are still being finalized with the government. The process is moving in the right direction, and we are hopeful of a positive outcome soon,” he said.

The PHF estimates that around Rs350 million will be required to cover the team’s travel, accommodation, and training costs. Under the proposed arrangement, the government would directly handle logistics such as airfare, training camps, and lodging, while the federation itself would cover the expenses of PHF officials traveling with the squad.

This model has been introduced to ensure greater transparency in the wake of past financial controversies, after audits revealed irregularities in fund usage between 2008 and 2022.

Pakistan’s hockey team cannot afford another setback. In 2019, the national side missed the Pro League due to funding issues and was fined by the FIH, leading to a sharp decline in world rankings. Participation in the league is seen as crucial for providing players with top-level international exposure.

For now, Pakistan hockey’s immediate future depends on timely financial support and approval from the FIH. Fans and players alike are hoping for a breakthrough that will allow the national team to compete on the world stage once again.
