Gamers Are Older, Happier, and More Creative Than Ever, Says ESA 2025 Report

 October 10, 2025

A new report from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has revealed surprising insights about global gaming trends — showing that gamers today are older, happier, and more creative than many people think.

The Power of Play 2025 Report, based on responses from over 24,000 participants aged 16 and above, provides a detailed look at how gaming has evolved into one of the most inclusive and beneficial forms of entertainment in the world.

The Average Gamer Is 41 Years Old

According to the report, the average gamer is now 41 years old, breaking the long-held myth that video games are only for teens. The study also found that the gender split is nearly equal, with men and women both actively engaging in gaming across multiple platforms.

These findings highlight that gaming has become a mainstream activity enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.

Gaming Boosts Happiness and Mental Well-Being

Beyond entertainment, gaming appears to deliver major emotional and mental benefits.

  • 81% of respondents said gaming provides mental stimulation

  • 80% said it helps them relieve stress

  • 73% said games make them feel happier, and

  • 64% reported that gaming helps them connect socially and feel less isolated

These results emphasize that gaming can play a positive role in mental health and social connection, especially in today’s digital world.

A Tool for Creativity and Cognitive Growth

The ESA report also found that players see gaming as more than just fun — it’s a source of learning and development.

  • 77% of gamers said it boosts creativity

  • 76% credited it with improving problem-solving skills, and

  • 74% said gaming enhances teamwork and cognitive abilities

Mobile Gaming Leads the Way

Mobile gaming remains the most popular platform globally, with 55% of respondents calling it their preferred way to play. Interestingly, nearly half of players under 35 and over 60% of players aged 50+ enjoy games on their phones — showing that mobile gaming continues to bridge the generation gap.
