PPP Dismisses Rumors About President Zardari’s Removal, Reaffirms Government Support
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has firmly dismissed recent rumors suggesting the possible removal of President Asif Ali Zardari, labeling them as baseless and misleading.
Speaking to media on Tuesday, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said the government “cannot function without the support of the PPP” and categorically denied speculation regarding any plans to remove President Zardari from office.
No Truth to Speculations
Bukhari addressed circulating reports claiming that a constitutional amendment was being prepared to facilitate the president’s removal. These rumors gained traction following the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s recent parliamentary majority increase after the restoration of reserved seats by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The move raised the ruling coalition’s total seats in the National Assembly from 218 to 235, granting it a two-thirds majority—a development that sparked media speculation over constitutional changes.
“Those behind such claims lack understanding of the Constitution and law,” Bukhari stated, adding that PPP has no plans to join the federal cabinet at this stage.
PML-N Also Denies Any Presidential Change
The rumors were further dispelled by PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who told a private TV channel that no such proposal to replace the president is under consideration at any level of the government.
“President Zardari is performing his duties as per the Constitution. There is no discussion about his removal,” Siddiqui emphasized.
He also acknowledged that although PPP and PML-N are allies in government, they may not always agree on every issue — which is natural in coalition politics.
Interior Minister Labels Rumors as Social Media Speculation
Earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also dismissed the reports as “social media speculation” and urged the public not to give attention to baseless claims.
“For the first time in a long while, the political leadership, the government, and the military establishment are aligned. That unity seems to worry some elements, who are now spreading unfounded narratives,” Naqvi said during a visit to Rohri, Sindh, on the eve of Ashura.
The Bottom Line
Despite growing influence in parliament, PML-N leaders have reaffirmed their coalition commitment with PPP, while PPP leaders have made it clear that President Zardari’s role is secure and constitutionally protected.
The party leadership continues to stress the importance of political unity, stability, and adherence to the Constitution, as Pakistan navigates a sensitive political landscape.
