Govt Considers Expanding Protected Electricity Slab

Govt May Expand Protected Electricity Slab to 300 Units for Consumer Relief
By Business Desk | Published: August 8, 2025 | 2:09 PM

In a move that could provide significant relief to electricity consumers, the government is considering increasing the protected consumption slab from 200 to 300 units.

The proposal follows concerns raised by lawmakers, who informed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that consumers using just 201 units were being charged an additional Rs. 5,000, calling the existing system unfair.

If the plan is approved, only users consuming more than 300 units would be subject to higher tariffs, allowing more low-usage households to benefit from subsidized rates.

A high-level committee is currently reviewing the criteria for protected and non-protected consumers and is expected to make formal recommendations soon.

This potential change could ease financial pressure on thousands of households struggling with rising electricity bills across Pakistan.
