Govt Ready to Launch Subsidized Electric Bikes Scheme

ECC Approves Rs. 9 Billion Subsidy Scheme for Electric Bikes and Rickshaws

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has given the green light to a major initiative aimed at promoting eco-friendly transportation in Pakistan. Chaired by Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, the committee approved a summary from the Ministry of Industries and Production for the implementation of a subsidy scheme for electric bikes and rickshaws.

Significant Budget Allocation for Green Mobility

A substantial budgetary allocation of Rs. 9 billion has already been made under the federal budget for FY 2025-26 to support this initiative. The scheme reflects the government’s commitment to encouraging sustainable mobility solutions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Incentives for Students and General Public

A key feature of the scheme is the distribution of free electric bikes to high-performing students enrolled in government colleges. This is part of a broader effort to promote academic excellence and support the youth with affordable and environmentally friendly transportation options.

Phased Rollout Plan

The program will be executed in two phases:

  • Phase 1:

    • 40,000 electric bikes

    • 1,000 electric rickshaws/loaders

    • Expected to be launched soon by the Prime Minister

  • Phase 2:

    • 76,000 additional electric bikes

    • 2,170 more rickshaws/loaders

A Step Toward Greener Transportation

The initiative is expected to not only reduce air pollution but also help lower fuel costs for consumers. By investing in electric mobility, the government aims to modernize the transportation sector, improve energy efficiency, and contribute to climate resilience.

More updates will follow as the program rolls out across the country.
