WNBA Addresses Ongoing Court Disruptions During Games
The WNBA is currently dealing with a series of on-court disruptions, as objects have been thrown during multiple games over the past two weeks, raising concerns about player safety and event security.
Incidents were reported during games held in Atlanta (July 29 and August 1), Chicago (August 1 and August 8), Los Angeles (August 5), and New York and Phoenix (August 6). While not all of the objects reached the court, the most recent incident occurred during the final moments of the Atlanta Dream’s victory over the Chicago Sky, causing an interruption in play.
In one notable case, during a game in Los Angeles, an item thrown from the stands came close to Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham, raising immediate safety concerns. Law enforcement authorities confirmed additional incidents at other venues, though it remains unclear whether those objects landed on the court.
League and Security Officials Respond
The repeated disturbances have posed unexpected challenges for WNBA officials, players, and arena security personnel. League representatives are now working closely with arena staff and local authorities to enhance security protocols and ensure the safety of athletes and fans alike.
Venues are being encouraged to review bag-check procedures, surveillance systems, and crowd monitoring efforts. Teams are also discussing new measures to deter such behavior and maintain a respectful environment during games.
Fan Conduct Under Scrutiny
While passionate fan support is encouraged, the league has emphasized that throwing objects onto the court poses a serious risk to player safety and disrupts the flow of the game. Officials urge all attendees to follow proper conduct guidelines, and violators may face ejection, fines, or legal action.
The WNBA continues to promote a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans, players, and staff. Further updates on new security measures and policies are expected as the season progresses.
