ICC to offer equal prize money at the Women’s T20 World Cup

The ICC has announced a landmark decision ensuring equal prize money for the winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, matching the amount awarded to the men’s champions earlier this year.

The decision was made during the ICC’s annual conference in July and marks a significant step towards gender equality in cricket.

The Women’s T20 World Cup, to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will see the winners receive USD 2.34 million—a substantial 134% increase from the USD 1 million awarded to Australia when they won the title in 2023. Similarly, the runners-up will now earn USD 1.17 million, a significant rise from the USD 500,000 awarded to South Africa for reaching their first final.

The two losing semi-finalists will each pocket USD 675,000, compared to the USD 210,000 they received in 2023. The total prize pool for the tournament has now increased to USD 7.96 million, a 225% jump from the previous edition’s USD 2.45 million.

This makes the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup the first ICC event to achieve prize money equity, nearly seven years ahead of the ICC’s initial target of 2030.

“This move aligns with the ICC’s strategy to prioritize the women’s game and accelerate its growth by 2032,” the ICC stated. Teams will now receive equal prize money for equivalent finishing positions in both men’s and women’s events, with the only difference in the men’s 2024 T20 World Cup being due to 10 additional teams and 32 more matches.

During the group stages of the Women’s T20 World Cup, individual match winners will be awarded USD 31,154. The six teams eliminated before the semifinals will share a pool of USD 1.35 million, which is an increase from the USD 180,000 pool in 2023.

Teams finishing third or fourth in their group will receive USD 270,000 each, while those finishing fifth will get USD 135,000.

Additionally, the ICC announced a minor schedule change for the October 5 double-header in Sharjah. Australia will now face Sri Lanka in the afternoon game, while Bangladesh vs England will take place in the evening slot.
