Moderate Flooding Reported in River Indus at Guddu and Sukkur Barrages
August 25, 2025
Rescue operations are underway across several districts of Punjab and Sindh as moderate flooding has been reported at Guddu and Sukkur barrages on the River Indus.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), a medium flood is currently passing through Head Sulemanki, while low to moderate flood levels are also being observed at Marala, Khanki, Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Chashma.
Flood Impact Across Punjab and Sindh
In Kasur’s Ganda Singh Wala, the sudden release of water into the Sutlej River caused villages and farmland to be submerged, affecting thousands of acres. Rescue teams are actively shifting families and livestock to safer locations.
In Burewala, floodwaters entered the Sahu Ka area, cutting off access to nearby villages after a breach on the Sahu Ka–Chishtian road. Similarly, in Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar, major crops such as cotton, rice, and sesame have been damaged, leaving many farming families devastated.
Eyewitnesses reported that several villagers have been forced to leave behind their ancestral homes, carrying limited belongings while wading through waist-deep water.
Cross-Border Coordination
Authorities confirmed that India has shared early flood warning information under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). According to the communication, heavy water flow in the Tawi River at Jammu may increase the risk of flooding downstream.
Pakistani officials have issued timely alerts based on the shared information, advising residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures.
Background on the Indus Waters Treaty
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 with the World Bank’s mediation, regulates the use of rivers flowing from India into Pakistan. Despite decades of political tensions, the treaty has remained in place as a crucial water-sharing framework between the two countries.
