India Bids to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Eyes 2036 Olympics

London: India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, aiming to strengthen its credentials to stage the 2036 Olympic Games, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced.

An IOA delegation presented the bid at the Commonwealth Sport headquarters in London on Friday.

“This is not just a bid to stage a sporting event — it is our commitment to deliver Games that are athlete-centred, inclusive, sustainable, and future-focused,” said IOA Executive Council member Harpal Singh. He added that hosting the Commonwealth Games would showcase India’s organizational capabilities and bolster its international credibility ahead of the Olympic journey.

India’s federal government recently approved the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and provided the necessary guarantees from relevant ministries. Singh described the bid as a “proud moment” aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of bringing the Olympic Games to India in 2036.

Canada and Nigeria are also competing to host the 2030 Games, with the host city set to be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in November.

In recent years, the Commonwealth Games have faced challenges finding hosts. The 2023 Games in Glasgow were scaled down after Australia’s Victoria withdrew due to rising costs, while the 2022 Games were moved to Birmingham following South Africa’s Durban pulling out for financial reasons.

India’s bid reflects its ambition to host a world-class multi-sport event and position itself as a major player in international sporting events.
