India to Raise Asia Cup Trophy Dispute with ICC
BCCI confirms plans to file complaint after trophy handover controversy
September 29, 2025
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that it will raise the Asia Cup 2025 trophy presentation issue with the International Cricket Council (ICC) during its upcoming meeting in November.
The development comes after India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, but did not collect the winner’s trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Trophy row at closing ceremony
According to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, the Indian team was directed not to receive the trophy during the presentation ceremony. “We decided not to take the trophy from the ACC chairman,” Saikia told Indian media.
As a result, the post-match ceremony experienced a short delay. Pakistan’s players collected their runners-up medals, while Indian cricketers Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, and Kuldeep Yadav received individual awards. Presenter Simon Doull later announced that the winners would not be collecting their trophy on the night.
The Asia Cup trophy was subsequently taken back by the organisers, leaving the Indian team awaiting a formal handover.
Background to the controversy
The incident followed a series of tense moments during the tournament, including skipped customary handshakes between the captains. Naqvi, however, stood firm that as ACC President it was his responsibility to present the trophy.
The BCCI has stated it will raise the matter formally at the ICC’s November meeting.
