India to resume issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens

India to Resume Tourist Visas for Chinese Citizens After Five-Year Pause

In a positive step toward improving diplomatic ties, India will restart issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals beginning July 24, 2025, according to an official announcement by the Indian Embassy in China. This marks the first time in five years that such visas will be granted, signaling a gradual thaw in bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

🌏 Easing Tensions After Years of Strain

Relations between India and China had soured following a 2020 military clash along their disputed Himalayan border, resulting in tightened regulations on travel, trade, and digital platforms. India responded by restricting Chinese investments, banning hundreds of Chinese apps, and cutting passenger air routes.

Around the same time, China suspended visa issuance to most foreign nationals, including Indians, citing the global COVID-19 pandemic. While student and business visas resumed in 2022, tourist visas remained restricted — until now.

✈️ Return of Direct Flights and Diplomatic Dialogue

Earlier this year, both countries agreed to restore direct air travel, a move followed by a series of high-level diplomatic meetings aimed at easing tensions. These included talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an international summit in Russia.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun welcomed the latest decision, stating:

“China is ready to maintain communication and consultation with India and constantly improve the level of personal exchanges between the two countries.”

📍 A Disputed Border and a Path Forward

India and China share a 3,800-kilometer disputed border, a longstanding issue since the 1950s. The two countries fought a brief war in 1962, and while dialogue has continued, border negotiations have been slow.

India’s Foreign Minister recently emphasized to his Chinese counterpart that peace along the border, troop withdrawal, and an end to restrictive trade practices are essential for restoring normal relations.

🧳 A New Chapter for Tourism and People-to-People Ties

The resumption of tourist visas for Chinese citizens marks a significant moment in reviving people-to-people connections and promoting regional stability. As travel opens up, this move could help rebuild trust and foster greater economic and cultural cooperation between the two Asian giants.
