India’s PM Modi likely to meet Trump in US next month: report

Indian PM Narendra Modi May Meet Donald Trump During UN General Assembly Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reportedly planning a potential visit to the United States next month to attend the UN General Assembly (UNGA), with sources suggesting he could meet former President Donald Trump, according to the Indian Express.

India’s foreign ministry has not yet confirmed the visit, and an official noted that speaker slots for the UNGA General Debate (September 23–29) are provisional and subject to change.

While the main purpose of the trip would be to attend the UN meeting in New York, the visit could also serve as a platform to discuss trade and tariff issues that have recently strained US-India relations.

The potential meeting follows Trump’s announcement of an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, increasing total US levies on Indian exports to 50%, one of the highest among US trading partners. Previous trade talks between New Delhi and Washington stalled over disagreements on India’s farm and dairy sectors and Russian oil purchases.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently stated that several major trade agreements, including with India, are still pending, but negotiations are hoped to conclude by end of October 2025.
