Eve Higgins Inspires Ireland to 42-14 World Cup Victory Over Japan
Eve Higgins delivered the decisive moment as Ireland Women opened their World Cup campaign with an impressive 42-14 win over Japan at Franklin’s Gardens.
Ranked six places below Ireland at No. 11, Japan staged a spirited fightback after falling behind 28-14, but Higgins read a floating pass perfectly, sprinting the length of the field to score a stunning interception try. The momentum-shifting moment crushed Japan’s hopes, and they never recovered.
Ireland showcased their trademark physical dominance, overcoming early handling errors before Amee-Leigh Costigan crossed for the opening try in the fifth minute. Their forward power soon produced another score, with Neve Jones finishing off a rolling maul.
Japan responded bravely with Haruka Hirotsu crashing over to reward their attacking flair, but Ireland’s backline clicked into gear. Beibhinn Parsons combined brilliantly with Costigan for a dynamic try, while Fiona Tuite capitalized on Higgins’ footwork to extend the lead.
After halftime, Japan’s maul pressure brought a try for Masami Kawamura, but Ireland’s defense held firm against another surge. Just when the Sakura Fifteen looked ready to break through again, Higgins struck with her interception to end their momentum.
With Japan deflated, Ireland finished strongly as Enya Breen added the final try to complete a commanding performance in their Pool C opener.
