CDA Introduces New Measures to Boost Cleanliness in Islamabad
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced a series of initiatives to improve cleanliness across Islamabad, including new bin models, stricter enforcement, and the involvement of international-standard waste management service providers.
The decision was made at a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa at CDA Headquarters on Friday. Senior CDA officials from administration, engineering, planning, and environment, along with directors of solid waste management, also attended the session.
Islamabad has been divided into two operational packages: one covering sectors and urban zones (1, 2, and 3), and the other covering rural areas (Zones 4 and 5). A two-bin waste collection system will be introduced in residential areas, while a three-bin system will be implemented in commercial centers and markets following a feasibility study.
Randhawa instructed officials to expedite the formal bidding process for selecting waste management companies, emphasizing transparency and merit-based selection. He stressed that both national and international firms should be encouraged to ensure high-quality services.
Additional measures include establishing a Material Recovery Facility for sorting waste, segregating green waste at the wholesale vegetable market, and creating a central control room for real-time monitoring of the system. Fines for littering will also be introduced to reinforce enforcement.
Randhawa highlighted the importance of incorporating best practices from Punjab and other provinces and urged that the process be completed swiftly. “Citizens of Islamabad deserve a high-quality, efficient cleanliness and waste management system, and it is our responsibility to deliver it without delay,” he said.
