Islamabad Launches Free Vehicle Emission Testing Ahead of Anti-Smoke Crackdown
Following the shutdown of brick kilns to combat pollution, Islamabad’s administration has now turned its attention to reducing harmful vehicle emissions.
As part of a citywide environmental initiative, free vehicle emission testing is being offered at three key locations across Islamabad. The service, which began on July 15, will continue until August 31, giving both private and commercial vehicle owners a chance to check their emissions at no cost.
Testing Locations:
-
Old Parade Ground
-
F-9 Park
-
Excise Office
Vehicles manufactured in 2021 or later are currently exempt from testing during this initial phase.

After August 31, the campaign will shift to enforcement. Starting September 1, any vehicle found emitting visible smoke will be barred from entering Islamabad and face hefty fines. This marks a significant step in the city’s effort to improve air quality and promote environmentally responsible driving habits.
So far, 2,778 vehicles have been tested under the program, with 2,665 passing the emissions criteria. Vehicles that meet the standard are given a barcode sticker for their windscreen, certifying their compliance.
Residents have largely welcomed the campaign and are urging authorities to expand testing facilities to reduce wait times and increase accessibility.
With pollution levels rising in urban areas, Islamabad’s move is seen as a positive step toward cleaner air and a healthier environment for all.
