Joe Root Creates History with Unmatched Feat in Test Cricket Against India

England’s star batter Joe Root has made cricketing history by becoming the first player in the world to score 500 or more runs in a Test series against India on three separate occasions.

This remarkable achievement came during the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at The Oval, where Root played a crucial knock of 105 runs off 152 balls in the second innings. His century not only pushed England closer to a memorable victory but also lifted his series tally to 537 runs at an average of 67.12, including three hundreds and a highest score of 150.

With this feat, Root has surpassed legendary Pakistani batters Zaheer Abbas and Younis Khan, both of whom had crossed the 500-run mark against India in two separate series. Zaheer scored 650 runs in the 1982–83 series and 583 in 1978–79, while Younis made 553 in 2005–06 and 508 in 2004–05.

Root’s consistency against India is now unparalleled in Test history. Prior to this series, he had scored 518 runs in 2014 and a career-best 737 runs at an average of 105.28 during the 2021–22 home series, including four centuries.

This latest performance places Root among England’s all-time greats, joining names like Wally Hammond, Jack Hobbs, and Ken Barrington, who have all scored 500+ runs in four or more Test series.

In doing so, Root has also eclipsed international icons like Sir Garfield Sobers, Everton Weekes, Ricky Ponting, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli, all of whom reached the 500-run mark in Test series twice during their legendary careers.

With his incredible consistency, Joe Root continues to climb the list of all-time leading run scorers in Test cricket, cementing his status as one of the greatest Test batsmen of the modern era.
