Legendary snooker star John Higgins, a four-time world champion, has been appointed Director and Chairman of the newly launched Professional Snooker Players Association (PSPA). This independent body aims to give players a stronger voice in the governance and commercial direction of the sport.

A New Era for Players’ Rights

The PSPA was officially announced on Wednesday, with a clear message: snooker players deserve a fair, transparent, and player-focused representation in all major decisions that impact their careers and the sport’s future.

According to a statement released by the PSPA, the group was formed in response to growing concerns that players lack sufficient influence in the sport’s commercial and governance structures.

“Players currently do not believe they have a large enough voice in the commercial direction of the sport,” the PSPA said. “We believe the governance of snooker should include more input from players.”

Big Names Join the Movement

The PSPA’s board features some of the most respected names in snooker, including Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby. In addition, legends such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ding Junhui, and Xiao Guodong have joined as members, lending strong support to the association’s mission.

John Higgins: “Time for Independence and Progress”

In his first public statement as PSPA Chairman, John Higgins emphasized the importance of unity and progress.

“Our sport deserves a strong, independent players’ association that stands for fairness, transparency, and progress,” Higgins said. “We aim to collaborate with governing bodies like the WPBSA and World Snooker, while remaining independent in commercial negotiations and agreements.”

He also highlighted the need for better support mechanisms for professional players, both on and off the table.

Collaborative Goals

The PSPA clarified that it does not seek conflict with existing snooker organizations, but rather a collaborative relationship that ensures player welfare, fair treatment, and improved professional conditions.

“We want to work closely with the WPBSA, World Snooker, and the WPBSA Players Board to enhance the sport for everyone, especially the players who are its foundation.”

A Promising Step Forward

The formation of the Professional Snooker Players Association marks a milestone moment in the history of snooker. With strong leadership and high-profile backing, the PSPA is poised to advocate for meaningful change and support the long-term growth of the sport.
