Josh Moorby Returns to Hurricanes for 2026 Super Rugby Season

The Hurricanes have confirmed the return of outside back Josh Moorby for the 2026 Super Rugby season, just a year after his move to French club Montpellier.

Moorby, the 2022 Hurricanes Rookie of the Year, has signed a two-year contract and will rejoin a backline that has been in rebuilding mode since 2024, when both Moorby and Salesi Rayasi moved to France.

During the 2025 season, Kini Naholo, Ngane Punivai, and former All Blacks Sevens speedster Fehi Fineanganofo stepped up, forming one of Super Rugby’s most dangerous wing combinations.

Head coach Clarke Laidlaw welcomed Moorby’s return, saying:

“We’re delighted to have Josh back. His overseas experience will be valuable, and he brings added depth to our outside backs. We can’t wait to see him in Hurricanes colours again.”

While Moorby played mostly at fullback in France, the position is currently held by All Blacks star Ruben Love. However, his versatility means the Hurricanes will have more options across the backline.

Moorby expressed his excitement at returning to Wellington:

“The Hurricanes are my rugby family. They gave me my first shot at Super Rugby, and I’m grateful for the chance to be part of the team again. My time overseas helped me grow as a player, and I’m looking forward to bringing that experience into the 2026 season.”

The 27-year-old is currently representing his home province Waikato in the NPC before linking up with the Hurricanes squad in November.
