Karachi’s Hub Dam Nears Maximum Capacity After Heavy Monsoon Rains
Karachi: The Hub Dam has almost reached its maximum storage level following days of intense monsoon rains across Sindh and Balochistan, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Rising Water Levels
According to the Irrigation Department, the water level at Hub Dam climbed to 338 feet, compared to 335 feet just a day earlier. With a maximum capacity of 339 feet, only one foot of storage remains before the dam reaches overflow.
Possible Spillway Opening
Authorities have cautioned that the spillway may be opened at any time to release excess water. The Ministry of Water Resources, WAPDA, and the Lasbela administration are supervising the situation to ensure safety.
Evacuation Alerts Issued
Disaster management officials have directed residents living near the Hub River to evacuate immediately as a precautionary measure. Operators of nearby crush plants have also been asked to move machinery and workers away from riverbanks to minimize risks.
Importance of the Dam
Located about 56 kilometers from Karachi, Hub Dam plays a vital role in supplying 100 million gallons of water daily to Karachi and parts of Balochistan. Fresh inflows from the surrounding mountains and hilly terrain have quickly filled the reservoir close to capacity.
Safety and Monitoring
Officials said the water will be released gradually if necessary to prevent flooding and protect nearby communities. The situation is being continuously monitored by the relevant departments.
Thado Dam Overflow Earlier
Earlier this week, Thado Dam in Gadap overflowed due to heavy rains, triggering an emergency in Malir’s Memon Goth area. Floodwaters also reached the M-9 Motorway near Jamali Bridge, disrupting traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad.
