Karachi Once Again at Risk of Urban Flooding

NDMA Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for Karachi and Hyderabad (Aug 24–28)

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory, warning of heavy rains in Karachi and Hyderabad between August 24 and 28. The forecast has raised concerns about urban flooding, power outages, and disruptions to essential services.

Forecast Details

  • Hyderabad: Expected to receive intense downpours with thunder and lightning, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

  • Karachi: Heavy rain is likely to begin on Thursday night, with possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

Safety Advisory

Authorities have urged citizens to take precautionary measures, including:

  • Avoiding flooded roads and underpasses

  • Staying away from electric poles and wires

  • Handling electrical appliances carefully

  • Clearing drainage systems to reduce waterlogging

The NDMA also advised families in vulnerable areas to keep emergency kits ready, including food, clean water, flashlights, and first aid supplies.

Fresh Monsoon System Ahead

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) noted that the recent rain spell in Karachi has weakened, with only light showers expected. However, a new monsoon system is forecast to enter Sindh on August 27, likely bringing more rain to Karachi and surrounding districts through August 30.
