Karachi Traders Call for Nationwide Strike Next Week

Karachi Chamber of Commerce Calls Nationwide Strike on July 19 Over New Tax Measures

The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has announced a nationwide strike scheduled for Saturday, July 19. The protest aims to challenge recent tax changes introduced in the Finance Bill, which local traders say negatively impact business operations.

The strike has gained support from major chambers of commerce and several industrial and trade associations across Pakistan, signaling widespread concern within the business community.

Key issues fueling the protest include the Rs. 200,000 tax threshold, expanded arrest powers granted to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and the mandatory implementation of digital invoicing and e-billing systems. Many traders argue these measures create unnecessary hurdles for businesses.

The call for strike comes after unsuccessful talks between KCCI representatives and a senior federal minister earlier this week.
