Kei Nishikori Parts Ways with Coach Thomas Johansson Ahead of Asian Swing

Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori has announced the end of his partnership with coach Thomas Johansson as he prepares for the final stretch of the season.

After being sidelined for nearly two years, Nishikori made his comeback in mid-2023 and officially teamed up with Johansson in February 2024. The former world No. 4 showed glimpses of strong form last year, reaching the Montreal Masters quarterfinal and winning the Helsinki Challenger.

Earlier this season, Nishikori impressed with a final run in Hong Kong, but consistency has remained an issue. The 35-year-old holds a 10-10 record in 2025, with his most recent outing ending in a first-round loss at the Cincinnati Masters.

Confirming the coaching split on X, Nishikori thanked Johansson for his contribution:
“Thomas and I have decided to go our separate ways. I want to thank him not only for his tennis knowledge but also for being a great person and teammate. I’ll keep you updated on any future changes in my team.”

Nishikori has also withdrawn from the US Open due to a back injury, with his focus now on recovery and preparation for the upcoming Asian swing of the ATP Tour.
