KMC Launches Crackdown on Infrastructure Theft, Relocates Drug Addicts to Rehab Centers
KARACHI: In a citywide effort to combat infrastructure theft and improve public safety, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has initiated a large-scale operation targeting individuals involved in the theft of iron rods, bridge railings, and other public property.
This decisive action follows a surge in complaints from citizens reporting stolen components from bridges, poles, boundary walls, and public buildings across the city.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab Orders Removal of Drug Addicts from Public Spaces
Mayor Murtaza Wahab has issued directives to remove drug addicts from streets, sidewalks, and other public areas. Under the new policy, those found are first transported to the City Wardens Headquarters, before being transferred to rehabilitation centers for proper treatment and care.
District-Wise Teams Deployed for Secure Relocation
According to KMC spokesperson Daniyal Siyal, special city warden teams have been deployed across all districts to ensure the relocation process is carried out respectfully and safely. The goal is not only to prevent theft and encroachment but also to support long-term recovery and reintegration.
“For a small amount of money, our city’s infrastructure and social integrity are being compromised,” Siyal said. “We’re addressing this with both urgency and compassion.”
KMC Prioritizes Long-Term Rehabilitation Facilities
In response to the growing issue, the KMC has also allocated land for the construction of dedicated rehabilitation centers, aiming to provide a sustainable solution. Mayor Wahab has placed this initiative among the city’s top priorities, emphasizing its importance in both urban development and social welfare.
Police Support the Operation with Area-Specific Raids
In a related development, Mubina Town Police recently detained 13 individuals after receiving reports of drug addicts congregating near University Road and adjacent neighborhoods.
SHO Chaudhry Nawaz confirmed that raids were conducted, and the individuals were taken into custody and moved to rehabilitation centers for recovery support.
Restoring Karachi’s Public Spaces and Protecting Infrastructure
The KMC remains committed to:
-
Securing public infrastructure
-
Restoring order in high-risk areas
-
Supporting rehabilitation and recovery
-
Protecting the city’s image and functionality
This balanced approach addresses both the root causes of substance abuse and the need to safeguard public assets.
