Lionel Messi scores on free kick to lift Inter Miami over Porto

Messi’s Free Kick Secures 2-1 Win for Inter Miami Over FC Porto in FIFA Club World Cup

ATLANTA — Lionel Messi’s stunning free kick in the 54th minute helped Inter Miami come from behind to defeat FC Porto 2-1 in a Group A match of the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday.

Porto took an early lead when Samu Aghehowa converted a penalty in the 8th minute, awarded after a VAR-reviewed foul inside the box. Miami’s goalkeeper Oscar Ustari made a valiant effort to save the spot kick, but the ball ultimately crossed the line.

Inter Miami responded quickly after halftime, with Marcelo Weigandt assisting Telasco Segovia’s equalizer just 90 seconds into the second half. Segovia’s precise finish leveled the score and reignited Miami’s momentum.

The winning moment came from Messi’s trademark free kick, his 68th career goal from a set piece, expertly placed in the top right corner past Porto’s goalkeeper Claudio Ramos in the 54th minute.

Despite Porto outshooting Miami 14 to 6, Miami’s defense held strong, with goalkeeper Ustari making crucial saves to maintain the lead. Porto’s Ramos also made several important stops but couldn’t prevent the decisive free kick.

This win marks Miami’s first goals and victory in the tournament, following a goalless draw against Al Ahly. Porto also scored their first goal after a 0-0 draw with Palmeiras.

The match showcased intense competition as both teams seek to advance in the Club World Cup, with Messi once again proving to be a game-changer for Inter Miami.
