ATLANTA β Lionel Messiβs stunning free kick in the 54th minute helped Inter Miami come from behind to defeat FC Porto 2-1 in a Group A match of the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday.
Porto took an early lead when Samu Aghehowa converted a penalty in the 8th minute, awarded after a VAR-reviewed foul inside the box. Miamiβs goalkeeper Oscar Ustari made a valiant effort to save the spot kick, but the ball ultimately crossed the line.
Inter Miami responded quickly after halftime, with Marcelo Weigandt assisting Telasco Segoviaβs equalizer just 90 seconds into the second half. Segoviaβs precise finish leveled the score and reignited Miamiβs momentum.
The winning moment came from Messiβs trademark free kick, his 68th career goal from a set piece, expertly placed in the top right corner past Portoβs goalkeeper Claudio Ramos in the 54th minute.
Despite Porto outshooting Miami 14 to 6, Miamiβs defense held strong, with goalkeeper Ustari making crucial saves to maintain the lead. Portoβs Ramos also made several important stops but couldnβt prevent the decisive free kick.
This win marks Miamiβs first goals and victory in the tournament, following a goalless draw against Al Ahly. Porto also scored their first goal after a 0-0 draw with Palmeiras.
